Hay Festival embraces a new reusable beverage cup to replace the single-use paper cup as part of the festival’s on-going sustainability programme.

19 June 2018

With a clear majority of ‘on the go’ cups being non-recyclable, consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the negative environmental impact they are causing and are now committing to using sustainable alternatives.

Hay Festival, held in Hay-on-Wye, Powys, Wales (24th May-3rd June 2018) contacted Green Goblet, a supplier of drinks containers for large events, in October 2017 with a view to sourcing a reusable coffee cup. The CorrettoTM Cup was identified as the best hot drink solution to replace single-use cups.

Manufactured in Amaray Corby, the cup features Bockatech’s EcoCoreTM foamcore walls which encourage heat retention internally whilst preventing scalding to the hands externally. The cup is made from a single polypropylene plastic, making it rigid, durable, and perfect for multiple uses. At the end of its life, it is 100% recyclable.

Zero Waste Events, the environmental social enterprise who managed the festival’s waste revealed significant reductions with ‘on the go’ beverage cup collections. Last year’s festival produced 350 wheelie bins of coffee cup waste alone, however in 2018, with the introduction of the Corretto Cup on a deposit-return scheme and other compostable cups, the total number of bags containing plastic-lined coffee cup waste was reduced to 25 in total. Remarkably, this highlights a substantial reduction of waste to landfill of 93%.

Hay Festival’s Sustainability Director Andy Fryers comments "We were delighted this year to be the first UK Festival to trial these new Corretto re-useable coffee cups from Green Goblet & Amaray. Our 2018 Rethink your Drink scheme fits in with our aim of removing single-use plastics and other linear resource systems. Roll on the circular economy."
