Recycling Plastic is a different proposition to Paper. It is used in so many combinations and with so many products that contamination is inevitable.
Many recycled cases have strange odours, and effect product performance and quality in negative ways. The cases however have a cost advantage and therefore seem attractive, especially as the packaging supply chain is under heavy financial pressure with the rise of PP costs.
Are recycled cases legal?
Amaray conducted limited tests for heavy metals on Black cases through an independent world class Laboratory. We tested cases used on packaging products from big studio names as well as small ones, and from a mix of suppliers, one being well known.
We tested Black cases only, and 25% failed the legal requirements for heavy metal content. The batch passed the EN 71, but was this luck? This shows there is a real issue with the current system.
Amaray recognise the value to society of using recycled material, and will undertake to explore routes and processes that can achieve this, whilst insuring regulatory compliance if there is sufficient support for such a project from our customers.
